Forests cover large areas in the NPP territory and are an important basis for economic activities in the Northern Periphery regions, sustaining local communities. In Finland, more than 80% of the NPP territory is covered with forests, while in Sweden and Scotland the forest cover is approximately 50 and 25%. Together, they constitute the vast majority of forest resource use in the NPP region. The aim of the project is to apply a newly developed decision support tool (Tool for Sustainability Impact Assessment - ToSIA) to selected enterprises in the Northern Periphery to assess the sustainability of their resource use, production processes and associated value chains. The value added by the project will be improved sustainability of typical forest-based industry enterprises in the NPP region through practical testing and application of the sustainability impact assessment tool.
