Transportation is a specific challenge for peripheral regions where there are problems with accessibility, sparsely population, demographic change, long distances, fluctuating demand, equality of service and high dependency on private cars. New initiatives/action models for optimizing this is desperately needed to guarantee holistic sustainability of these regions.
The idea behind this project is to create a new action model (or models) to develop and renew public paid and sustainable transportation services and infrastructure in sparsely populated areas in order to ensure sustainable regional development and equal opportunities for its population in regions strongly affected by low accessibility, sparsely population and demographic change.
The project idea is to increase accessibility (social services, healthcare services, cultural services and leisure time services) while public paid support for transportation services is decreasing. Transportation methods (vehicles buses and other sustainable modes, taxis, private cars etc) and demands (to and from schools, to and from hospitals, to and from airports, to and from work) should be combined and developed in a new way. This is specially a challenge in small rural communities with diminishing population within peripheral municipalities.
