The main project is expected to result in an established mobile location service, locally adapted for the integration of current web services viewed with the use of mobile phones, as an added value to visitors. The Tourist Navigator will be an implementation of a platform for the cellular phone network. It will be targeting the tourist market. The TN will focus on implemented services that improve communication between the tourist actors (visitors, tourist SME's and tourist organizers). The project will contribute to the sustainable economic development of the partner areas. It will support innovation, and accessibility through transnational cooperation and the sharing of knowledge and experience which will ultimately address the common challenges faced by the participating partner communities.
The project will establish comprehensive understanding about all aspects of the feasibility of establishing and running The Tourist Navigator to provide basic level services in rural areas focusing on tourist sector as both the main providers and the main client group. The policy and cultural environment for establishing different types of services in each region will be mapped and transnational similarities and differences plus wider implications in the Northern Periphery area will be mapped. Where feasible and sustainable, TN services will be established. The impacts on individuals, communities and institutions will be evaluated. A toolkit, utilising knowledge generated by the project, will be produced to facilitate other communities in establishing TNs.
