Northern Periphery Programme 2007-2013
Strategic Project Ideas under Development -
Renewable Energy Solutions
4 February 2011

As part of the activities for the Strategic Project Call, the Programme Secretariat has invited project idea holders to submit their ideas on a special template for wide dissemination, to ensure strong transparency and openness, to be able to facilitate a wide participation in the potential projects.

Please find below an overview of the strategic project ideas the Programme Secretariat has received for the theme: “Renewable energy solutions adapted for remote areas and to the scale of sparsely populated areas”.

Before publication, the Programme Secretariat has checked the ideas on the following points:

  • Whether the project idea fits with the Terms of Reference of the selected theme;
  • Whether the current partnership constellation is appropriate to carry out the described project activities;
  • Whether products and/or services are outlined.

Please note that at this stage, the Programme Secretariat has not assessed the quality of the products/services described in terms of transnationality and innovativeness or whether they meet the high quality standards for strategic projects outlined in the Strategic Project Call announcement.

No project ideas are rejected at this stage based on the quality of their products and services. Instead, the Programme Secretariat expects product and service development as well as the project partnership to be the main focus of strategic project applicants in the remaining time period until the call deadline of 21st March 2011.

Strategic project applicants that have requested a meeting with the Programme Secretariat on 15th February should be aware that the main focus of this meeting will be products/services and the development of the project partnership constellation.

Organisations that have an interest in a specific theme are encouraged to contact project idea holders to explore possibilities for future cooperation.

Strategic Project Ideas under Development

  • E-Renewable Storage - Pure Energy Center, Scotland - Link

    The Financial Renewable Energy Storage (FRES) project will build upon NPP projects to provide key transnational knowledge, expertise, products and services that will uniquely increase the level of renewables in the remote populated areas. The project is uniquely designed to provide the missing links for a wider uptake of renewables. It will target the social and economic recovery, reduction in energy bills, fuel poverty, lack of grid connection by developing and implementing viable support mechanisms accross the NPP territory.

  • Proven Solutions for Local Renewable Energy Applications in the Northern Periphery Area - Finnish Forest Research Institute METLA, Finland - Link

    The project aims to transfer proven renewable energy solutions across the NPP area by providing an online biomass availability and trade tool, a roadmap to bioenergy strategies and partnerships as well as state of theart and unique success factors of bioenergy applications.

  • Social Enterprises in Community Renewable Energy - North Karelia University of Applied Sciences, Finland - Link

    The project develops and implements viable support mechanisms for responsible community based renewable energy enterprises.
